The Sheep Detectives is based on Leonie Swann’s 2005 German-language novel “Three Bags Full,” adapted by screenwriter Craig Mazin (Chernobyl, “The Last of Us,” and the latter two Hangover films). It is a mix of a shepherd who loves his flock, an Agatha Christie–style murder mystery and the loved ones who want to find out who the criminal is. Oh, and lots of British humor.

In this live-action and CGI animated hybrid film, mixing the genres may sound as if it may not be entertaining enough to spend time at the cinema. I found it to be interesting, humorous, as well as including the depth of real-life themes like loss, pain, being different and more. These themes are not always easy to discuss with children, as well as adults who may prefer to steer away from the reality of loss, grief, funerals and other related subjects. Director Kyle Balda (the Despicable Me films) does a good job of coordinating it all, without being too heavy.

The flock owner, George (Hugh Jackman) tends to the sheep with plenty of kindness, as he has given them names. The sheep are differentiated in several ways, especially their personalities. The voice cast does a tremendous job of creating a community of sheep that the younger generation can understand, from the youngest to the older generation. Among them are Lily (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), Mopple (Chris O’Dowd), Zora (Bella Ramsey), Sir Ritchfield (Patrick Stewart), and Sebastian (Bryan Cranston). These are but a few to love.

The other humans besides George have ties to or live in the village of Denbrook. Among the suspects are the butcher (Conleth Hill), the neighboring shepherd (Tosin Cole), George’s estranged daughter Rebecca (Molly Gordon, FX’s “The Bear”) and his lawyer, Lydia Harbottle (Emma Thompson). A tourist, Elliot Matthews (Nicholas Galitzine) attends the village festival and suddenly immerses himself in the investigation conducted by Officer Tim Derry (Nicholas Braun). He is great at portraying a real unexperienced policeman.

As I left the theater, I felt a positive feeling. This is good family entertainment opening in time for Mother’s Day weekend. In the world of cinema, where scripts full of violence, drama, horror are plentiful, it is refreshing to find a good film like this that a family (or friends) can gather and enjoy. Although I did not view this with my family, it is one that I can recommend to them and friends who seek this type of entertainment.

It is co-produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Project Hail Mary).

Rating: PG for thematic material, some violent content and brief language. 109 minutes

The Sheep Detectives is available on Thursday evening before opening in theaters nationwide on Friday, May 8, 2026.
