Directed by Lawrence Lamont (“Rap Sh!t” TV series, Big Sean Music Video Director) and written by Syreeta Singleton (“Insecure” TV series), One of Them Days is their feature film debut. It is a comedy and as with most comedy films, TV shows and stand-up performances, some of the humor is acceptable and great for some people. Other audiences may just stare blankly with limited reactions. While I did enjoy the story line about the long-term friendship between roommates Dreux (Keke Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA), there are some scenes that were good, but too “over the top” exaggerated for my taste. The two actresses give excellent and authentic performances as friends – almost sisters – who care about each other but work hard to make their daily interactions positive.

Synopsis

Best friends and roommates Dreux (Keke Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA) are about to have One of Them Days. When they discover Alyssa’s boyfriend has blown their rent money, the duo finds themselves going to extremes in a comical race against the clock to avoid eviction and keep their friendship intact.

One of my favorite actors in the film is Katt Williams as the character named Lucky. His performance was mostly limited to standing outside a building talking to people before they entered. His dialogue is limited, but it is noticeable to me he made the most of his on-screen time. He did make me laugh. He is the 2018 Winner Primetime of an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series – in the “Atlanta” TV series. He was also in the Lionsgate film, For the Love of Money, as Pastor G, with a film in pre-production titled For the Love of Mine. Follow his work and what is to come on Netflix.

Another standout actor I noted is Patrick Cage who portrays Maniac, as known in the neighborhood and shows interest in Dreux (Keke Palmer). She seems to be interested but plays it very cool. They have great scenes together, with good chemistry. If not familiar with the actor, he has performed in “Mayor of Kingstown” TV series (2024) and “Westworld” TV series (2018).

Keyla Monterroso Mejia also stars as a loan officer role in a local payday loan branch. She is so good at mocking people (very unprofessionally) when they are in the branch, it made me sink in my chair. She is a good actress and has to her credit “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Abbott Elementary” TV series among others.
