Written and directed by Ryan Fleck & Anna Boden, Freaky Tales has a theatrical release in Austin TX and one I was pleasantly surprised to learn about just a couple of days ago. I have not seen big budget marketing for this film, so I gleefully opened an email stating that Pedro Pascal was in this film. Imagine my joy when I found my local theater had a late-night screening on a Thursday evening! I am glad I saw the film in the theater instead of a smaller screen. I began to feel like I had slipped into a film festival screening with like minded film fans surrounding me.
First read what IMDb has listed and then read the details provided by the company.
IMDb Storyline: “Four interconnected stories set in 1987 Oakland, CA. will tell about the love of music, movies, people, places and memories beyond our knowable universe.”
Synopsis: Set in 1987 Oakland, *Freaky Tales* is a multi-track mixtape of colorful characters – an NBA star, a corrupt cop, a female rap duo, teen punks, neo-Nazis, and a debt collector – on a collision course in a fever dream of showdowns and battles.
The cast is so good will all they do to transport us to the 1980s and was pleasantly surprised to see Tom Hanks show up in this film. He stars as Hank. There is no way to tell you all the details because I don’t want to spoil it. The late Angus Cloud stars as Travis. He passed in July 2023. Pedro Pascal stars as Clint and the audience learns of his story in the latter chapter that has the most action and loss of life that leads to – well, more loss of life during the “showdowns and battles” as described below. I wish I could say they were all “battles” on the stage, but it is not.
