Directed by Renny Harlin (The Strangers: Chapter 1,2,3, Die Hard 2) from a screenplay written by Pete Bridges (“Two Years Later” TV series) and John Kim (Bait), Deep Water is a basic story of damage to a plane during an international flight and it having to land in the ocean. It may seem at first that there is nothing new to expect from this film, but it does have some good moments to make the audience gasp. Watching scenes of disaster and destruction is never easy to watch.
Synopsis: A flight from Los Angeles to Shanghai goes down in the middle of the Pacific. After surviving the crash, the survivors soon discover they’re not alone and they must survive the shark infested waters. (IMDb)
The film stars Aaron Eckhart and Ben Kingsley as the commercial plane pilots. They are both tenured pilots and each have their personal story about life during their career. While the focus is not on the pilots, the character Eckhart portrays is closer to the story of a family of four on the flight, Jaya (Kelly Gale, most recently seen in Beast in April), who has a son named Finn (Elijah Tamti) and is recently married to a gentleman who has a young daughter named Cora (Molly Belle Wright, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, Omaha). It is evident that Cora has not adjusted to her Daddy being married and tasked with taking care of Finn on the flight. As the audience watches the turn of events on the flight, this task weighs heavily on Cora’s thoughts. I watched the film ‘The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” and became a fan of Molly’s performance. She is once again a standout young actress, working alongside Aaron Eckhart and other established adult actors. She is one main reason to take a chance to view this film. If you are a fan of watching an actor portray a self-centered and obnoxious character – who can really get on your nerves in a split second, consider watching actor Angus Sampson portray that character. You don’t wish anyone harm on a flight, but Sampson portrays this passenger’s behavior one to watch in some of the scenes. Then as a viewer, you may begin to consider what you would do to survive.
Rated R and 107 minutes
Deep Water is in theaters on May 1, with some limited theaters opening April 30, 2026.
