Nacho Vigalondo’s film, Daniela Forever, premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival and is now available in limited theaters and on Digital on July 22, 2025. This filmmaker wrote and directed the Sci-Fi romance drama who is well known for Colossal (2016), Extraterrestrial (2011) and Timecrimes (2007). He also had a TV series from 2019 – 2021 titled Vigalondo Midnight Madness. As much as I tried to follow and stay engaged in this story that Vigalondo wrote the screenplay for, I found it a bit hard to do so overall. I liked the ideas behind it but found myself becoming confused. I absolutely need to watch it over again.
Nicolas (Henry Golding) is a British DJ living in Madrid, Spain. At the beginning of the film, he seems to have found his dream girl, Daniela (Beatrice Grannò). But it ends in tragedy, and he goes into depression. He is convinced to investigate and then joins an experimental program that involves taking a daily pill with promises of lucid dreams, connecting with lost loved ones and handling their grief better. The viewer sees that Nicolas wants to do it his way, knowing it is experimental, and finds himself in misery.
Vigalondo and his D.P. Jon D. Dominguez create interesting backgrounds for the characters and some for the reality sequences, others for the dreams.
One very creative scene is when Nicolas walks through a dream while people and cars bounce off him, floating up into thin air.
The film is rated R and is 113 minutes. It is now available at Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar starting July 11, 2025. It then goes on to Digital platforms.
