The Seed of Truth is a short film that was screened during the Hollyshorts Film Festival. Currently, the film continues the film festival circuit, screening in September and October at Catalina Film Festival, NoHo Cinefest, and Raw Science Film Festival.
According to a statement provided by the filmmaker, W. Y. Geng, “the inspiration for the film came from a touching letter a father wrote to his daughter while imprisoned in the Soviet Union Gulag. The father was executed, and the letter was discovered many years later. We did draw inspiration from HBO’s “Chernobyl” regarding language and cast American actors without faking accents and focused on emotions. We’re not making a “Russian period piece” but using history to warn the present.”
“History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes” was also shared by writer/director W. Y. Geng. He adds, “The film explores important themes surrounding the perils of disinformation and the politicization of science—very relevant today.”
The key creatives are Asian filmmakers. Written and directed by W. Y. Geng, this film is very impressive during the limited run time and leaves the audience wanting to learn more. It is a good entry for people to go back and research more history about what it is that the scientists were going through, as well as the families who were proud of their work, yet had to stay quiet. In this case, the family is told the scientist head of household must leave on business but does not return.
I highly recommend viewing the film as it screens during the upcoming festivals and in other opportunities to learn more about this history.
