Power Ballad made its North American Premiere at SXSW on Saturday, March 14, and it was among the TOP 10 of films I viewed during the SXSW Film & Television Festival. I have been a fan of Paul Rudd’s work, usually seen in many comedic roles. Without providing any spoilers, this drama does have comedic moments, but there is plenty of music to enjoy.
Why do I find this easily part of my Top 10 viewed? I enjoyed Paul Rudd’s role as a musician who stood up for himself to claim the credit he deserved for his creative work. It was not an easy venture to undertake, and I believe it can be inspiring to anyone who has felt the disrespect and abuse of having creative work taken from them.
Directed and co-written by John Carney with Peter McDonald, the film also stars Nick Jonas, Peter McDonald, Marcella Plunkett, Havana Rose Liu, and Jack Reynor.
Synopsis: When Rick (Paul Rudd), a past-his-prime wedding singer, meets fading boy-band star Danny (Nick Jonas) during a gig, the two bond over music and a late-night jam session. But when Danny turns one of Rick’s songs into the hit that reignites his career, Rick sets out to reclaim the recognition he believes he deserves – even if it means risking everything he cares about. Power Ballad is a feel-good story about music, self-respect, friendship, and the price of ambition.
Rating: R for language throughout and some drug use
